Family Involvement

The people close to you are a key part of your team during rehabilitation, and they play a vital role in your ongoing progress when you return home. That’s why family members and friends are encouraged to assist with your rehabilitation program here at the Center. That’s also why our close-to-home location is so convenient for patients from Central Massachusetts.

Because your health problems can also affect your family and friends, we emphasize their involvement during the rehabilitation process. This begins with a family orientation program that’s held shortly after you’re admitted. This program provides an overview of the rehabilitation process and allows time for questions about your stay.

During your stay, your physician and other team members will meet regularly to review your progress. You and your family may meet with physicians, nurses and therapists on your team to review and discuss your treatment goals and plans for discharge.

Members of your clinical team will also teach family members how to help with your care after discharge. This teaching includes therapies, discharge planning, follow-up appointments and medications -- all designed to provide optimal support for you when you leave the Center.

We’ll also help you and your family understand and deal with the lifestyle changes that can occur following an illness or injury. The Center offers support groups, counseling and other related services. You may also request a visit from the hospital chaplain or your own clergy. In addition, your case manager will help you and your family identify any ongoing services you may need in the community.

To make it even more convenient for immediate family and close friends to stay involved during your rehabilitation process, the Center’s seven-days-a-week visiting hours are extremely flexible. We also have toys in our waiting room to help keep younger family members occupied during family visits. And your pet can even come visit, too.
